The country’s top motorcycle-maker, Hero Honda Motors Limited, on Monday said it would invest an additional Rs. 150 crore in its new facility in Uttarkhand and hoped that the government would not raise interest rates that are affecting two-wheeler sales. “We hope the government does not raise interest rates to curb inflation. We are already suffering due to hardening of interest rates,” Hero Honda Motors managing director Pawan Munjal said after the commissioning of the plant here. The company barely held on to its sales in 2007-08 and is confident of achieving the same this year as well. In such a scenario, the company does not plan to increase the prices of its models in the immediate future.
“The commodity prices have been on the upswing. We are watching the situation, but we are not in a great hurry to revise the prices,” Munjal stated.
He said the emergence of low priced ‘Nano’ from Tata Motors stable is unlikely to impact motorcycles sales in a big way. “Nano will not impact our sales. There is a huge market at the lower end that we cater. It is not going to opt for Nano,” he added.
The Haridwar plant, spread over 275 acres, will have an initial installed capacity of 5 lakh units and will be scaled up to 10 lakh units by the end of the year. “We hope to manufacture 7 lakh units in the first year of production,” Munjal said.
The company has already invested Rs. 450 crore in the plant and will be making additional investment of Rs. 150 crore by the end of the year to raise capacity. The company hopes to expand installed capacity to 1.5 million units by 2010 with a combined investment of Rs. 1,900 crore.
The group will now have a capacity to manufacture 4.4 million units.
Nearly 100 ancillaries will be setting up their manufacturing base in Haridwar over the next two years. To begin with, 40 ancillary units will be setting up their manufacturing base in the industrial parks being developed by Arrow Infrastructure, a group enterprise, for Hero Honda and its associates.
Hero Honda hopes to take advantage of the tax benefits offered by the state and central governments to shore up its bottomline.  It also plans to manufacture Splendour Plus and Passion Plus, its two high volume high margin products.
“A project Samadhan will decide on utilisation of capacities at Gurgaon and Dharuhera we ramp up capacities in Haridwar,” Munjal stated.

New dedicated courts for minor traffic offences

General news

Minor traffic offences will be dealt with by new dedicated courts under plans announced by the Government today.

Setting up special traffic courts will free up magistrates to deal with more serious cases, according to the Ministry of Justice.

About half a million traffic cases are heard by magistrates each year, often taking longer to process than major offences, the department said.

The announcement follows a trial of dedicated traffic courts in Essex, Hampshire, Kent, Lincolnshire, London, Nottinghamshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and West Yorkshire.
Under plans, every police force area will have a dedicated traffic court by April 2014, using specialist prosecutors to deal with up to a 160 cases a day.

The new courts will only hear cases where there is a guilty plea. Offences dealt with could include speeding and red-light jumping.

Justice Minister Damian Green said: "Enforcing traffic laws is hugely important for road safety and saving lives.

"However, these cases take nearly six months on average from offence to completion, despite the fact that over 90% of cases result in a guilty plea or are proved in absence - this is simply unacceptable.

"The justice system must respond more quickly and effectively to the needs of victims, witnesses and local communities, and these dedicated courts will enable magistrates to better organise their work and drive greater efficiency."

Chief Constable Chris Eyre, the Association of Chief Police Officers’ lead on criminal justice, said: "We have implemented this new procedure to traffic cases with great success in nine police forces, radically simplifying and speeding up the process.”

Neil Greig, the Institute of Advanced Motorists’ director of policy and research said: "We welcome the focus on improving detection rates and investigation time for serious offences.”

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – With just a few days left before the 2013 Bike Rally, bike-related businesses say they are anticipating one of the best rallies they've seen in the Grand Strand in years.
"We've got a full staff working," said SBB General Manager Bill Barber. "We literally had to put Four Corners back together because we tore it down after we sold it."
Barber says the SBB staff decided to shut down SBB Four Corners on Highway 17 because the building had been losing money for years, but they decided to bring it back for one last hurrah at this bike rally, which he anticipates will be huge.
"We've got 19 outdoor permits," Barber said. "And about 18 or 20 indoor vendors at both locations. We've got a lot of vendors coming."
All across the Grand Strand, bikers say they are anticipating a big turnout for the 2013 rally, saying obstacles like Take Back May or permitting problems haven't materialized this year, and businesses are bringing back some older events from before the helmet laws.
"At the Springmaid Pier, we're doing a party at the pier," said Harley Davidson's Kelly Payne. "We did those years ago, now we want to bring them back."
There has been a lot of anti-biker sentiment in years past, but now bikers businesses say public opinion is changing, and businesses that once kept bikers at an arm's length are now taking a closer look at the potential revenue that comes in with the rally.
"Most bikers are relatively well-to-do," Barber said. "These guys' second or third vehicle is a $30,000 motorcycle."
Barber also says a huge factor has been the weather, but not just in the Myrtle Beach area. He says rain in Florida affects the turnout here.
"Panama City's rally was last week, it was mainly rained out," he said. "A lot of those people will now come here."

Myrtle Beach ready for motorcycle rally

The Associated Press
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. --
Businesses along the Grand Strand are excited about the upcoming motorcycle rally.
The Spring Myrtle Beach Harley Davidson Crusin' the Coast rally is adding entertainment to attract more visitors, The Sun News of Myrtle Beach ( http://bit.ly/Ypqnj3) reported. This year's rally also will include a 90-mile bike ride across the Grand Strand.
The Myrtle Beach Speedway and Bucksport Marina are expanding the number of events in hopes of drawing a bigger crowd.
"The Speedway used to be one of the most popular rally points during the spring and fall bike weeks but hasn't hosted a rally for years," said speedway general manager Howard Richardson.
Bucksport Marina general manager Ralph Simms said his business opened a new 5,000-square foot Tiki bar with a bandstand. There will be live music each day of the rally at a complex on the Waccamaw River.
But there are still some questions about this year's event. Organizers say the festival is starting May 10 and running through May 19.
But permits for vendors issued by Horry County do not take effect until May 13.
Fifty-four permits had been issued as of May 1, said county spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier.
There are also questions about how many bikers will show up, as the rally continues to be affected by efforts in recent years to make sure bikers don't cause too much disruption.
Attendance peaked about 10 years ago and began dropping when Myrtle Beach City Council took a number of steps to crack down on pr9oblems with noise, public drunkenness and other problems.
Last year, police issued 285 warnings and issued 147 citations. Fines were assessed totaling $33,318.

MZ rescue fails

Bad news for fans of the legendary German MZ marque. Despite positive noises at last year’s Milan Show and meetings, reportedly, with more than 30 possible investers, the historic firm from Zschopau has been declared insolvent. According to the official receiver an immediate investment of around €1m was required, but not forthcoming.
MZ, once one of the world’s biggest bike makers, went bankrupt in 1991 but was rescued with government funding only to fail again in 1996. Hong Leong Industries of Malaysia took over only to collapse in 2008 having lost a reported €70 million.
The brand was then bought by ex-racers Martin Wimmer and Ralf Waldmann in 2009. However Wimmer went bankrupt late last year. The last 20 workers have now been laid off
